"Because a sibling is really the bling in your life"

How was it growing up with a sibling?

Each one of us has a unique and fun story of growing up with a sibling. Oh! The ups and downs in a sibling relationship are the ones that get us loving and respecting our siblings with age and time.

Well, if you would have asked me this same question a few years back, I would have probably given a very irritated reply, but hey, isn’t that exactly how sibling relationships are? Can’t do with and can’t do without kinds! For me, growing up with an elder sister was one of the best experiences ever.

As siblings, there are endless emotions involved, but above all, it is the one of unconditional love. No matter what, we can always lean on them for being the friendly support we need in situations where we don’t want to run to our parents.

So, where does it all begin?

More often than not, brothers and sisters are each other’s first playmates and, as adults, the oldest friend. But sibling relationships play out in unpredictable ways with magical results. Brotherhood and sisterhood can teach social skills and teach us how to resolve conflicts.

Since siblings are often our first peers, their relationships tend to follow fairly predictable patterns. Younger siblings are fascinated by older ones and eager to learn their games and customs. In contrast, older siblings test their leadership and conflict-resolution skills on their younger brothers and sisters. These interactions are primarily favorable. Older-younger sibling power dynamics melt away over time when younger siblings hit late adolescence. After that, everyone is equal, which leads to better conflict resolution.

No matter what you do, they will always be around, and that’s the beauty of the bond between a brother-sister, sister-sister, or brother-brother! There is so much comfort in having them around; it’s like having a best friend that you can never avoid! When both siblings are old enough to understand each other, their relationship evolves into even more beautiful.

Parents play an equally important role in a sibling relationship—a significant part of the emotions between the siblings’ forms during the early developmental years. When a single child becomes a sibling, parents need to put in their all to make the elder one comfortable around the new little one and bring out feelings of love and care towards the little one. But, it does not end there; it’s a lifelong cycle of trying to make both ends meet wherever required and not letting any of them go astray.

For there is no friend like a sibling in calm or stormy weather, to cheer one on the tedious way, to fetch one if one goes astray, to lift one if one totters down, to strengthen whilst one stands

What do we learn from this?

When it comes to friends, petty fights can turn into more significant issues and damage a relationship. However, with siblings, the lasting connection can never be completely shattered, no matter how harsh the disagreement is.

Everyone says that siblings become better friends through the years. The lucky ones are those who are friends with their siblings. It is never too late to create a better relationship with your younger or older, despite any age difference.

Though you may not call your sister your best friend, she is. And no matter how many times your brother makes fun of you, he will always have your back.

So, call your brothers and sisters and tell them how much they mean to you. Whether or not you see one another regularly or only speak occasionally, family is family, and a sibling is forever someone who will pick up the phone.

Having a sister or a brother is like having a forever best friend. You know whatever you do, they will still be there.
